The Grand Raid
16th October 2025 marks the start of the Grand Raid in Réunion! This fabulous race brings together more than 2,800 participants from all over the world. This year, there will be as many professional trail runners as amateurs at the start of ‘La Diagonale des Fous’ (‘The Madman’s Diagonal’) at Ravine Blanche in Saint-Pierre. But in total there will be nearly 6,000 participants, as there are three other races at the same time as the Grand Raid:
- the Trail de Bourbon (111 km, 6,500 m elevation gain),
- La Mascareigne (65 km, 3,700 m elevation gain),
- and the Zembrocal Trail (a 180 km relay race with 4 participants).
Réunion’s Grand Raid is the ultimate dream for ultra-trail runners. With a distance of 165 km and 10,000 metres of elevation gain, it is only for extreme runners. This new trend is gaining more and more followers, but remains off-limits to the uninitiated. Welcoming stars of the discipline and amateurs from all over the world, discover the most exciting mountain race in the world.
The Grand Raid period is also an ideal time to admire the island’s beauty, its varied landscapes and its natural sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as the weather conditions are wonderful at this time of the year. Hotels tend to fill up quickly, so it is very important to book your stay well in advance.
